The Ionian Islands Region (PIN) is the management body of the BIOnian project and will be provided the digital tool for monitoring, decision-making and highlighting the biodiversity of the Region, as well as for developing and implementing policy for its protection and preservation. Also, the geographical and descriptive database of the environmental and spatial information of the Region will be used by the Department of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Ionian Islands. In particular, the Department of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Ionian Islands is responsible for the planning and implementation of environmental, spatial and urban planning policy in the Ionian Islands Region, in the context of principles and national guidelines for environmental protection and sustainable development. It is based in Corfu (Island) and is composed of the following Departments, which are also based in Corfu:
a) Department of Environmental and Spatial Planning, which is responsible, in particular, for the specialization of environmental and spatial policy guidelines at the level of Decentralized Administration, the coordination of actions for the monitoring and protection of the environment, the process of preliminary environmental assessment and evaluation of projects and activities, the approval of environmental conditions of projects and activities, as well as any other responsibilities assigned to the decentralized state administration in accordance with current legislation.
b) Department of Urban Planning and Applications, which is responsible, in particular, for the specialization of general directions and instructions in matters of urban planning of residential policy and housing, as well as economic and building regulations, the coordination of the implementation of project implementation plans provided by the general urban planning plans (GIS) and studies, the execution of decisions for the demolition of arbitrary buildings or constructions issued by the competent Service of the Municipality in accordance with the current legislation.
The Benakeio Phytopathological Institute (BPI), a Legal Entity of the Public Sector (NPDD), is a non-profit research body overseen by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. The scientific activities of the Institute are organized in three Scientific Departments: the Department of Phytopathology, the Department of Entomology and Agricultural Zoology, and the Department of Pesticides Control & Phytopharmacy.
The strength of the Institute is the breadth and depth of the scientific specialization of its executives, making it unique in terms of combining specialties from agronomists and specialized toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, analytical chemists, environmentalists and environmental engineers. More than 100 scientists make up the potential of the Institute, which is dedicated to applied research, providing technical information, advice and services to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, producers and the Greek and European industry.
The knowledge produced enables all the bodies that benefit from it to make the right and substantiated decisions and to formulate a policy based on scientific data with a direct consequence on the quality of our daily life at the national level. At European level, it provides services to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with the participation of its scientists in permanent committees of experts and with the implementation of programs on behalf of EFSA. BPI is the only Institute in our country that has been selected by EFSA as a cooperating body in its specialization issues.
The Institute is often called upon to deal with emergencies or risks that may be of great importance for the protection of crop production and agricultural income, the protection of the environment and public health (hazardous residues in imported species, water pollution from agrochemicals). For this reason, its scientists focus on assessing and addressing the risk during primary agricultural production and in addition respond to all of today's emergencies and needs.
BPI coordinates and participates in competitive standard and applied research programs, both European and national, such as FP7, HORIZON 2020, LIFE + Environment, EFSA, INTERREG and GGET.
The Institute is certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 and ELOT EN 1429 in the field of Co-financed Project Management and has therefore entered into force all required procedures, services and instruments for the management, monitoring and certification/receipt of physical and financial part of the Project's Sub-action 1 that will take over.
BPI participates in the BIOnian project with two of its laboratories, namely the Laboratory of Non-Parasitic Diseases and the Laboratory of Toxicological Control of Pesticides.
The Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS) – based in Rethymno, Crete – was founded in 1985 and is one of the 8 Institutes of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), the leading research institution in Greece. IMS’s purpose is to promote research in the humanities, social sciences, as well as the application of science and technology on cultural heritage and the environment. It is distinguished for its research in history and culture and is the only research or university institution in the country to have been awarded four ERC Grants (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) ever awarded to the humanities in Greece.
The IMS research programs focus on the history and culture of Greece and other countries of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea in various historical periods, from prehistory to modern times. To date, its research focuses on three research axes, 1) Mediterranean History, 2) Mediterranean culture, 3) Geoinformatics technology for Culture and Environment, and is undertaken by ten teams of researchers based in the Institution’s research sections, centers, and labs.
Since 1996, the Laboratory of Geophysical - Satellite Remote Sensing & Archaeo-environment of IMS-FORTH, as the implementing body of Sub-Action 2 of the BIOnian project, has been active in the areas of Geophysical Prospection, Satellite Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), 3D Reconstructions & VR and Archaeo-environment and has been widely recognized due to the quality of the services provided, the results of the research projects carried out and the training of students and professional archaeologists both in Greece and abroad. The Laboratory employs the most modern techniques for accurate field measurements and has a technical support (hardware and software) that meets the needs of processing, analyzing and mapping geophysical and satellite data.
The Laboratory has entered into numerous collaborations with university and research bodies from Greece and abroad at an international level and beyond the borders of the Mediterranean (e.g. Australia, Italy, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, USA, Cyprus, Hungary, S. Korea, France, Germany, Spain, England, etc.). The continuous activities of the Laboratory are disseminated through scientific publications, international conferences and workshops.
The Laboratory consists of geophysicists, geologists, archaeologists, geoarchaeologists and computer engineers who can provide adequate support to a significant range of applications, conducting innovative research related to Environmental and Cultural Geographical Information Systems and web-based GIS applications and has developed a range of applications which are freely accessible from the internet, as well as sophisticated online GIS and spatial database services.
The Ionian University as the implementing body of Sub-action 3 of the BIOnian project, was established in 1984 and now consists of twelve Departments of Studies, six of which were established in 2018 with the integration of the Ionian Islands TEI (Law 4559 / 3.8.2018). Of these new Departments, four will accept the first students in the academic year 2019-2020, while the other two new Departments will be accepted until the year 2021-2022. During the academic year 2018-2019, the following are operating: Department of History (1985), Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (1986), Department of Music Studies (1992), Department of Archives, Library Science & Museum Studies (1993), Department of Informatics (2004), Department of Audio and Visual Arts (2004).
It is clear from the number of Departments and the object being treated in each of them, that the Ionian University has chosen to move in small and therefore controllable sizes. At the same time, the dispersal of the buildings of the seven Departments in different parts of the urban fabric of Corfu, whose population is 40,000, indicates the University's desire to join the spatial structures of a city with a rich historical, urban and architectural past.
Since 2018, with the integration of Ionian Islands TEI, the Ionian University is expanding its operation to three other islands, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Having been under the rule of the Venetians, the French, the English, the Ionian Islands are historically different from the rest of the Greek provinces, which with the overthrow of the Byzantine State in the 15th century joined the Ottoman Empire until the 19th and early 20th, when their gradual liberation and their integration into the modern Greek nation-state began. The Ionian Islands came thus closer to the Western European ways of life and thought, which in turn left their mark on the urban and rural landscape of the islands, on the mentalities and habits of the people.
It is indicative that the first Greek University, the Ionian Academy, was founded in Corfu in 1824 during the English occupation. From the first decades of the 19th century until the accession of the Ionian Islands to the modern Greek state in 1864, a remarkable literary current developed there with special characteristics, which contributed a lot to the spiritual ferment of modern Hellenism. The University is headquartered in Corfu.
